ACT Math
Lesson Plan
Solving quadratics (factoring, formula, completing the square)
Goals / Objectives
Solve a quadratic equation by rewriting it in standard form and choosing the fastest method from its form: the zero-product principle, the square-root method, completing the square, or the quadratic formula
Apply the zero-product principle to a factored quadratic equation, producing both roots with correct signs, and explain why the product must equal zero and no other value
Solve $x^2 = k$ and $(x+h)^2 = k$ by the square-root method, reporting both roots and handling $k<0$ and $k=0$
Complete the square to solve a quadratic, including when $a \neq 1$ and when $b$ is odd
Apply the quadratic formula correctly, including when $a$ is negative and when the roots are irrational
Standards
A 506. Identify solutions to simple quadratic equations A 507. Solve quadratic equations in the form (x + a)(x + b) = 0, where a and b are numbers or variables A 509. Work with squares and square roots of numbers A 605. Solve quadratic equations A 601. Manipulate expressions and equations F 401. Evaluate linear and quadratic functions, expressed in function notation, at integer values
