HSF.BF.B.4.d: (+) Produce an invertible function from a non-invertible function by restricting the domain.

What you'll learn

  1. Explain why non-one-to-one functions (those failing the horizontal line test) do not have inverses on their full domain
  2. Identify the symmetry or turning point that causes the horizontal line test to fail
  3. Restrict the domain of a non-invertible function to produce a one-to-one function that does have an inverse
  4. Choose domain restrictions that preserve useful portions of the function (e.g., the right half of x^2)
  5. Find the inverse of the restricted function and state its domain and range
  6. Recognize that different domain restrictions produce different inverse functions
