- Lesson Plan →Objectives, pacing and practice, built from this lesson's brief.
- Guided Notes →One page your students fill in and keep.
- Exit Ticket →Three items at the end of class. No student accounts.
- Re-teach →After an exit ticket: who missed what, and what to do tomorrow.
- Homework →Assign practice; it grades itself.
**5.MD.B.2**: Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Use operations on fractions for this grade to solve problems involving information presented in line plots. *For example, given different measurements of liquid in identical beakers, find the amount of liquid each beaker would contain if the total amount in all the beakers were redistributed equally.*

What you'll learn
- Create a line plot by marking a number line with evenly spaced fractional intervals (halves, fourths, or eighths of a unit) and placing X marks above the values to represent a data set of measurements
- Choose an appropriate fractional scale for the number line based on the denominators present in the data set - for example, using eighths when the data includes 1/8, 3/8, and 1/2
- Read and interpret a line plot to answer questions about the data, including identifying the most common measurement, the range, and the number of data points at each value
- Add fractions from a line plot to solve problems such as "What is the total length of all objects that measured 3/4 inch?"
- Subtract fractions from a line plot to solve problems such as "How much longer is the longest object than the shortest object?"
- Multiply a fraction by a whole number using line plot data to solve problems such as "If there are 4 objects that each measure 3/8 inch, what is their combined length?"
