Learning Goal
Part of: Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems — 2 of 3 cluster items
Understand the concept of a unit rate
Understand the concept of a unit rate $a/b$ associated with a ratio $a:b$ with $b \neq 0$, and use rate language in the context of a ratio relationship. For example, "This recipe has a ratio of 3 cups of flour to 4 cups of sugar, so there is 3/4 cup of flour for each cup of sugar." "We paid $75 for 15 hamburgers, which is a rate of $5 per hamburger."
-- Standard 6.RP.A.2
*Expectations for unit rates in this grade are limited to non-complex fractions.*
-- CCSS, 6.RP.A.2 footnote

What you'll learn
- Distinguish a **rate** (ratio of unlike quantities) from a same-unit ratio, and recognize that rates do not require time as one of the units.
- Define the unit rate `a/b` associated with a ratio `a:b` (with `b != 0`) as the value of *a* corresponding to **one** of *b*.
- Compute the unit rate from a ratio by dividing `a / b`, using a ratio table or double number line to make the scaling explicit.
- Read and write a unit rate using rate language: *"___ per ___"* or *"___ for each ___"*, including the unit label as part of the answer.
- Recognize that every ratio `a:b` yields *two* unit rates -- `a/b` (a per one b) and `b/a` (b per one a) -- and choose the one that fits a given question.
- Use a unit rate in rate language to describe a ratio relationship in real-world contexts, including the standard's recipe and hamburger examples.
