What you'll learn
- Carry out the long-division standard algorithm for multi-digit dividends with one- or two-digit divisors, including problems requiring multi-step regrouping and an internal zero in the quotient.
- Explain each step of long division in place-value language -- a digit written above the hundreds place stands for hundreds, not "just a digit."
- Estimate the *number of digits* in a quotient before computing, as a reasonableness check on the final answer.
- Express the result of a division with a remainder in three equivalent forms: whole-number remainder (R notation), fractional remainder (r/divisor), and decimal extension.
- Solve real-world division problems by selecting the form of the remainder appropriate to the context -- round up for "how many needed," round down for "how many full," convert for divisible quantities, keep the whole-number remainder for "how many left."
