Exercises: Recognizing and Drawing Lines of Symmetry
Work through each section in order. For every figure, apply the fold test: if you folded
the figure along the line, would the two halves match exactly? Equal-looking pieces are
not enough -- they must be mirror images.
Recall / Warm-Up
These problems review shape vocabulary from 4.G.A.1 and 4.G.A.2.
Fluency Practice
The heart shape shown is folded exactly along the dashed vertical line, and the two
halves land on top of each other and match exactly. Is the dashed line a line of
symmetry for this heart shape?
How many lines of symmetry does the rectangle shown have? Remember: a line only
counts if folding along it makes the two halves match exactly.
