Lesson Plan

Setting up and solving proportions

Goals / Objectives

Set up a proportion from a verbal description, ensuring consistent placement of units

Solve proportions using cross-multiplication

Calculate unit rates and use them to solve problems

Apply proportional reasoning in real-world contexts (recipes, maps, scale drawings, unit pricing)

Decide whether a relationship is proportional before setting up a proportion

Standards

"Questions will require students to solve problems by using a proportional relationship between quantities, calculating or using a ratio or rate, and/or using units, derived units, and unit conversion." "Apply proportional relationships, ratios, and rates in a wide variety of contexts. Examples include, but are not limited to, scale drawings and problems in the natural and social sciences."
