Lesson Plan

Scatterplots and line of best fit

Goals / Objectives

Use a scatterplot and its line of best fit to describe how two measured quantities are related and to predict a value, judging whether the prediction lies within the data

Read a point as one case carrying two measurements, with units, and explain why two points can share the same x-value

Describe a scatterplot's association using form, direction, and strength

State the criterion that makes a line the line of best fit, and explain why the line need not touch any data point

Read a predicted value off a line of best fit, and distinguish interpolation from extrapolation, explaining why an extrapolated prediction is weaker

Identify a point far from the overall pattern and predict which way it pulls the fitted line

Standards

"Analyze and interpret data represented in a scatterplot, but do not make predictions." "Analyze and interpret data represented in a scatterplot to make predictions." "Fit linear models to data represented in a scatterplot."
