Lesson Plan

Pythagorean theorem and common triples

Goals / Objectives

State the Pythagorean theorem (a^2 + b^2 = c^2) and identify the hypotenuse and legs in a right triangle

Use the theorem to find a missing side when two sides are known

Recognize common Pythagorean triples (3-4-5, 5-12-13, 8-15-17, 7-24-25) and their scalar multiples

Apply the converse of the Pythagorean theorem to determine whether three given side lengths form a right triangle

Solve SAT-style problems involving the Pythagorean theorem in coordinate geometry and real-world contexts

Standards

"Solve problems in a variety of contexts using: • the Pythagorean theorem."
