Lesson Plan
Key features of quadratics (vertex, axis, intercepts, direction)
Goals / Objectives
Read a quadratic's key features (direction, vertex, axis of symmetry, intercepts, and maximum or minimum value) from any form of its equation, from its graph, or from a table of values
Locate the vertex from vertex form, from standard form by x = −b/(2a) and substitution, and from a graph, and state the axis of symmetry as an equation, using it to find a mirror point
Explain why the solutions of f(x) = 0 are exactly the x-intercepts, and compute the y-intercept as f(0) from any form
State a maximum or minimum value, distinguished from where it occurs, and the range that follows from the vertex and direction
Locate the vertex from a table of values, and match a table to its equation
Standards
"Understand and use the fact that for the graph of y = f ( x ), the solutions to f ( x ) = 0 correspond to x-intercepts of the graph and f (0) corresponds to the y-intercept of the graph; make connections between the input/output pairs and points on a graph; interpret this information in a context." "Make connections between a table, an algebraic representation, or a graph of a: • quadratic or exponential function that does not involve a transformation, not in context."
