Lesson Plan

Quadratic functions: standard, vertex, and factored forms

Goals / Objectives

Choose the form of a quadratic function (standard, vertex, or factored) that displays the feature a question asks for, and produce that form by conversion

Convert standard form to vertex form by completing the square (recalled from sat-adv-equiv-ctsq), including when the leading coefficient is not 1

Convert standard form to factored form, read the zeros correctly from the factors, and recognize when no integer factored form exists

Convert vertex form directly to factored form as a difference of two squares

Expand vertex form or factored form back to standard form, and use the expansion to show that all three forms are the same function

Standards

"Determine the most suitable form of the expression representing the output of the function to display key features for: • a quadratic function." "Make connections between a table, an algebraic representation, or a graph of a: • quadratic or exponential function that does not involve a transformation, not in context."
