Lesson Plan
The discriminant and number of solutions
Goals / Objectives
Determine whether a quadratic equation has two, one or no real solutions from the sign of $b^2 - 4ac$, without solving it
Explain the classification from the $\pm\sqrt{\phantom{x}}$ term in the quadratic formula
Find every value of an unknown coefficient that gives a stated number of real solutions
Translate a condition stated in words or about a graph's $x$-intercepts into a condition on the discriminant
Standards
"Determine the conditions under which a quadratic equation has no real solutions, one real solution, or two real solutions." "Relate the solutions of a system of a linear and a nonlinear equation in two variables to the graphs of the equations in the system."
