Lesson Plan

Speed of Sound, Frequency, and Wavelength

Goals / Objectives

Relate the characteristics of waves to the properties of sound waves

Describe sound as a longitudinal wave of compressions and rarefactions that requires a medium

Describe the speed of sound and explain how it changes with the medium and with temperature

Apply the relationship v = fλ to relate the speed, frequency, and wavelength of a sound wave

Explain why frequency stays fixed but wavelength changes when sound crosses into a new medium

Standards

14.1

"Sound is a disturbance of matter that is transmitted from its source outward in the form of longitudinal waves." "The relationship of the speed of sound v, its frequency f, and its wavelength $\lambda$ is given by $v = f\lambda$, which is the same relationship given for all waves." "In a given medium at a specific temperature (or density), the speed of sound v is the same for all frequencies and wavelengths."
