Lesson Plan

Estimate population parameters with margin of error

Goals / Objectives

Use a sample statistic (x-bar or p-hat) as a point estimate of the corresponding population parameter (mu or p)

Use a simulation model for random sampling to generate the sampling distribution of an estimate

Estimate a margin of error from the spread of the simulated sampling distribution (about two standard deviations)

Report and interpret an interval estimate (point estimate plus-or-minus margin of error) in the context of the data

Explain how sample size affects the margin of error, and the meaning and limits of a margin-of-error statement

Standards

HSS.IC.B.4

HSS.IC.B.4: Use data from a sample survey to estimate a population mean or proportion; develop a margin of error through the use of simulation models for random sampling.
