Apply the Addition Rule

Goals / Objectives

State and apply the Addition Rule, P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A and B)

Explain why P(A and B) is subtracted - the overlap is double-counted when P(A) and P(B) are added - using a Venn diagram

Apply the special case for mutually exclusive events, P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B), and recognize when it applies

Compute P(A or B) from sample-space counts, two-way tables, and given probabilities

Interpret the resulting probability in terms of the model and its context
