Common Core Math - HS Geometry

Lesson Plan

Represent and describe transformations

Goals / Objectives

Represent transformations in the plane using transparencies, geometry software, or coordinate rules

Describe transformations as functions that map input points to output points

Identify the four basic transformations: translation, rotation, reflection, and dilation

Distinguish between rigid motions (distance- and angle-preserving) and non-rigid transformations (those that do not preserve distance or angle)

Predict the effect of a given transformation on a figure by reasoning about distance and angle preservation

Standards

HSG.CO.A.2

HSG.CO.A.2: Represent transformations in the plane using, e.g., transparencies and geometry software; describe transformations as functions that take points in the plane as inputs and give other points as outputs. Compare transformations that preserve distance and angle to those that do not (e.g., translation versus horizontal stretch).
