Common Core Math - HS Functions

Lesson Plan

Graph root and piecewise functions

Goals / Objectives

Graph the parent functions y = sqrtx and y = cbrtx, identifying domain, range, intercept, and end behavior for each

Graph transformed square root and cube root functions using strategic points and knowledge of the parent shape

Graph piecewise-defined functions by graphing each piece on its specified interval, using open and closed dots to indicate included/excluded endpoints

Graph step functions (greatest integer / floor function) and recognize the characteristic staircase pattern

Graph absolute value functions from the algebraic definition as a piecewise function and from the V-shape pattern

Determine domain, range, and continuity for piecewise-defined functions by analyzing each piece and the transition points

Standards

HSF.IF.C.7.b

HSF.IF.C.7.b: Graph square root, cube root, and piecewise-defined functions, including step functions and absolute value functions.
