Common Core Math - HS Functions

Lesson Plan

Combine function types

Goals / Objectives

Add, subtract, multiply, and divide functions to create new functions, using correct notation: (f + g)(x) = f(x) + g(x)

Determine the domain of a combined function as the intersection of the component domains (with additional restrictions for division)

Build real-world models by combining simpler function components (e.g., revenue minus cost equals profit)

Identify the component functions within a combined model and explain what each represents in context

Evaluate combined functions at specific inputs by evaluating each component and then combining

Connect the standard's example (constant + decaying exponential for cooling) to the modeling principle

Standards

HSF.BF.A.1.b

HSF.BF.A.1.b: Combine standard function types using arithmetic operations. For example, build a function that models the temperature of a cooling body by adding a constant function to a decaying exponential, and relate these functions to the model.
