Common Core Math - HS Algebra
Lesson Plan
Choose equivalent forms to reveal properties
Goals / Objectives
Factor a quadratic expression to reveal the zeros (x-intercepts) of the function it defines, and interpret those zeros in context
Complete the square in a quadratic expression to produce vertex form, and identify the maximum or minimum value of the associated function
Use properties of exponents to transform exponential expressions, such as converting an annual growth rate to an equivalent monthly rate
Choose which form of an expression to produce based on what property needs to be revealed -- zeros, vertex, or rate of change
Explain what each equivalent form reveals and why different forms serve different analytical purposes

HSA.SSE.B.3: Choose and produce an equivalent form of an expression to reveal and explain properties of the quantity represented by the expression.
a. Factor a quadratic expression to reveal the zeros of the function it defines.
b. Complete the square in a quadratic expression to reveal the maximum or minimum value of the function it defines.
c. Use the properties of exponents to transform expressions for exponential functions. For example the expression 1.15^t can be rewritten as (1.15^(1/12))^12t ~= 1.012^12t to reveal the approximate equivalent monthly interest rate if the annual rate is 15%.
