Common Core Math - Grade 8

Lesson Plan

Know the formulas for the volumes of cones, cylinders, and spheres

Goals / Objectives

State and apply the formula V = pir^2h to calculate the volume of a cylinder given its radius and height

Explain why the volume of a cone is exactly one-third the volume of a cylinder with the same base and height, and apply V = (1/3)pir^2h to calculate cone volumes

Apply the formula V = (4/3)pir^3 to calculate the volume of a sphere given its radius

Select and apply the correct volume formula when solving real-world and mathematical problems involving cylinders, cones, and spheres

Compare the volumes of different solids by analyzing how changes in radius or height affect the result, and solve problems that require relating the volumes of two or more shapes
