Lesson Plan

Solve systems of two linear equations in two variables algebraically

Goals / Objectives

Solve a system of two linear equations using the substitution method by isolating one variable in one equation and substituting the resulting expression into the other equation

Solve a system of two linear equations using the elimination method by adding or subtracting equations (with multiplication if needed) to eliminate one variable

Determine by inspection whether a system of two linear equations has no solution or infinitely many solutions by comparing the structure of the equations

Estimate the solution of a system by graphing both equations and identifying the approximate point of intersection

Verify a solution to a system by substituting the values of both variables into both original equations and confirming that both equations are satisfied

8.EE.C.8.b

8.EE.C.8.b: Solve systems of two linear equations in two variables algebraically, and estimate solutions by graphing the equations. Solve simple cases by inspection. For example, 3x + 2y = 5 and 3x + 2y = 6 have no solution because 3x + 2y cannot simultaneously be 5 and 6.
