Common Core Math - Grade 8

Lesson Plan

Understand that solutions to a system of two linear equations correspond to points of intersection of their graphs

Goals / Objectives

Explain that a solution to a system of two linear equations is an ordered pair (x, y) that makes both equations true simultaneously

Graph two linear equations on the same coordinate plane and identify their point of intersection as the solution to the system

Verify that the intersection point satisfies both equations by substituting its coordinates into each equation

Classify a system of two linear equations by the number of solutions (one solution, no solution, or infinitely many solutions) based on the behavior of the two lines

Explain why graphing can produce imprecise solutions when the intersection point has non-integer coordinates, and recognize the need for algebraic methods

Standards

8.EE.C.8.a

8.EE.C.8.a: Understand that solutions to a system of two linear equations in two variables correspond to points of intersection of their graphs, because points of intersection satisfy both equations simultaneously. 8.EE.C.8: Analyze and solve linear equations and pairs of simultaneous linear equations.
