Common Core Math - Grade 8

Lesson Plan

Graph proportional relationships, interpreting the unit rate as the slope

Goals / Objectives

Graph a proportional relationship from a table, equation, or verbal description, producing a straight line through the origin

Identify the unit rate of a proportional relationship and explain why it equals the slope of the corresponding graph

Calculate slope as rise over run from a graph and connect this calculation to the unit rate in the original context

Compare two proportional relationships given in different representations (table, graph, equation, or verbal description) and determine which has the greater rate

Interpret the slope of a proportional relationship graph in context, using appropriate units (e.g., "miles per hour," "dollars per pound")

Standards

8.EE.B.5

8.EE.B.5: Graph proportional relationships, interpreting the unit rate as the slope of the graph. Compare two different proportional relationships represented in different ways. For example, compare a distance-time graph to a distance-time equation to determine which of two moving objects has greater speed.
