Common Core Math - Grade 7

Lesson Plan

Use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems

Goals / Objectives

Identify the type of percent problem (percent of a quantity, percent increase/decrease, percent error) and select the appropriate proportional relationship to model it

Solve problems involving tax, tips, markups, markdowns, commissions, and fees by computing a percent of a base amount and combining with the original quantity

Calculate simple interest using the formula I = prt and interpret each variable in context

Compute percent increase and percent decrease using the relationship (change / original) x 100

Calculate percent error as |measured - actual| / actual x 100 and interpret it in context

Solve multistep problems by chaining proportional relationships, tracking intermediate quantities, and assessing the reasonableness of final answers

Standards

7.RP.A.3

7.RP.A.3: Use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems. Examples: simple interest, tax, markups and markdowns, gratuities and commissions, fees, percent increase and decrease, percent error.
