Common Core Math - Grade 7

Lesson Plan

Know the formulas for the area and circumference of a circle and use them to solve problems

Goals / Objectives

State the formula for circumference (C = pid = 2pir) and identify what each variable represents

State the formula for area of a circle (A = pir^2) and identify what each variable represents

Compute circumference and area given radius or diameter, using both exact (pi) and approximate answers

Informally describe why C = pid using the definition of pi as C/d

Solve real-world problems involving circumference and area of circles

Distinguish between circumference (a linear measure) and area (a square measure) and select the appropriate formula for a given context

Standards

7.G.B.4 -- Know the formulas for the area and circumference of a circle and use them to solve problems; give an informal derivation of the relationship between the circumference and area of a circle.
