Lesson Plan

Solve real-world and mathematical problems by graphing points in all four quadrants

Goals / Objectives

Plot ordered pairs of rational numbers in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane to model real-world and mathematical situations.

Recognize that two points sharing an x-coordinate lie on a vertical segment, and two points sharing a y-coordinate lie on a horizontal segment.

Compute the distance between two points on a horizontal or vertical segment as the absolute value of the difference of the differing coordinates: |y_1 - y_2| (vertical) or |x_1 - x_2| (horizontal).

Apply the plot-and-measure approach to real-world problems involving city grids, coordinate maps, navigation grids, and elevation profiles.

Compute side lengths and perimeters of polygons on the coordinate plane when the sides are horizontal or vertical.
