Common Core Math - Grade 5
Lesson Plan
Write simple expressions that record calculations with numbers
Goals / Objectives
Translate a verbal description of a calculation into a numerical expression using appropriate grouping symbols (parentheses, brackets, braces)
Identify the operation words in a verbal description (e.g., "add," "multiply," "the sum of," "the product of") and map each to its corresponding mathematical symbol
Write an expression that matches a multi-step verbal calculation, placing grouping symbols to preserve the intended order of operations
Interpret the meaning of a given numerical expression in words without evaluating it
Compare two numerical expressions and describe the relationship between them without computing (e.g., "this expression is four times as large as that one")
Recognize that expressions with the same numbers but different structures represent different calculations and therefore different values
Standards
5.OA.A.2
5.OA.A.2: Write simple expressions that record calculations with numbers, and interpret numerical expressions without evaluating them. For example, express the calculation "add 8 and 7, then multiply by 2" as 2 x (8 + 7). Recognize that 3 x (18932 + 921) is three times as large as 18932 + 921, without having to calculate the indicated sum or product.
