Common Core Math - Grade 5

Lesson Plan

Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm

Goals / Objectives

Execute the standard multiplication algorithm to multiply multi-digit whole numbers (up to 4 digits by 2 digits, and 3 digits by 3 digits) accurately and efficiently

Explain why each partial product in the standard algorithm represents multiplication by a specific place value (ones, tens, hundreds)

Use estimation to predict the approximate size of a product before computing, and to verify the reasonableness of a computed answer

Connect the partial products in the standard algorithm to the area model, showing that both organize the same four (or more) sub-products

Identify and correct common errors in multi-digit multiplication, including misaligned partial products, carrying mistakes, and missing placeholder zeros
