Common Core Math - Grade 5

Lesson Plan

Use place value understanding to round decimals to any place

Goals / Objectives

Round decimals to any specified place (ones, tenths, or hundredths) using the standard rounding procedure

Identify which two multiples of a given place value a decimal falls between, then determine which is closer

Use a number line model to visualize where a decimal sits relative to its two rounding benchmarks

Apply the "look at the digit to the right" rule and explain why it works in terms of closeness to benchmarks

Avoid cascading-round errors by rounding from the original number, not from a partially rounded result
