Common Core Math - Grade 5

Lesson Plan

Recognize volume as an attribute of solid figures and understand concepts of volume measurement

Goals / Objectives

Explain what volume is and how it differs from area - volume measures the space inside a three-dimensional solid figure, while area measures the surface of a two-dimensional shape

Identify and describe a unit cube as a cube with side length 1 unit that has a volume of "one cubic unit"

Determine the volume of a solid figure by counting the number of unit cubes that pack it without gaps or overlaps

Use the phrase "cubic units" correctly when reporting volume, distinguishing it from "square units" used for area

Recognize that volume is an attribute of solid (3D) figures, not flat (2D) figures, and identify which real-world objects have volume that can be measured

Standards

5.MD.C.3

5.MD.C.3: Recognize volume as an attribute of solid figures and understand concepts of volume measurement. a. A cube with side length 1 unit, called "a unit cube," is said to have "one cubic unit" of volume, and can be used to measure volume. b. A solid figure which can be packed without gaps or overlaps using n unit cubes is said to have a volume of n cubic units.
