Common Core Math - Grade 5

Lesson Plan

Convert among different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system

Goals / Objectives

Convert from larger units to smaller units within the metric system by multiplying by the appropriate power of 10 (e.g., 3.5 m = 350 cm)

Convert from smaller units to larger units within the metric system by dividing by the appropriate power of 10 (e.g., 5 cm = 0.05 m)

Convert between customary units using non-base-10 conversion factors (e.g., 3 feet = 36 inches, 5 pounds = 80 ounces)

Determine whether to multiply or divide when converting, based on whether the target unit is smaller or larger than the starting unit

Solve multi-step, real-world problems that require converting measurement units as part of the solution process

Use conversion tables and charts as reference tools to identify the correct conversion factor for a given pair of units
