Common Core Math - Grade 1
Lesson Plan
Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems
Goals / Objectives
Solve "add to" and "take from" word problems with result unknown (e.g., "8 birds are on a fence. 5 more land. How many now?")
Solve "put together" and "take apart" word problems with total unknown or addend unknown (e.g., "There are 14 dogs: 6 are big and the rest are small. How many are small?")
Represent a word problem situation using objects, drawings, or an equation with a symbol (such as ? or ☐) for the unknown
Identify where the unknown is in a word problem - result, change, or start - and set up the matching equation
Use addition and subtraction strategies to solve problems with totals up to 20
