Lesson Plan

Matrix operations (add, subtract, scalar multiply, multiply)

Goals / Objectives

Add, subtract, scalar-multiply and multiply matrices, first deciding from their dimensions whether the operation is defined

State a matrix's dimensions as rows x columns and identify the entry at a given row and column

Add and subtract matrices of the same dimensions and multiply a matrix by a scalar, stating that a sum or difference of differently sized matrices is undefined

Determine from dimensions alone whether AB is defined, and state the product's dimensions

Compute AB by the row-by-column rule for 2x2 by 2x2 and 2x2 by 2x1

Show with a specific pair that AB ≠ BA, and state the identity matrix's effect under multiplication

Standards

"N 406. Add two matrices that have whole number entries" "N 505. Add and subtract matrices that have integer entries" "N 607. Use relations involving addition, subtraction, and scalar multiplication of vectors and of matrices" "N 705. Multiply matrices" "N 706. Apply properties of matrices and properties of matrices as a number system" "Note: A matrix as a representation of data is treated here as a basic table."
