ACT Math
Lesson Plan
Solving right triangles with trig ratios
Goals / Objectives
Solve a right triangle for an unknown side or acute angle using sine, cosine or tangent
Choose which of sine, cosine or tangent to use, given which two of opposite, adjacent and hypotenuse the problem involves
Solve for an unknown side whether the variable sits in the numerator or the denominator of the ratio
Use an inverse trig function to find an unknown acute angle from two known sides, distinguishing $\tan^{-1}$ from $\frac{1}{\tan}$
Translate an angle-of-elevation or angle-of-depression description into a labelled right triangle and solve it
Standards
G 604. Apply basic trigonometric ratios to solve right-triangle problems G 509. Express the sine, cosine, and tangent of an angle in a right triangle as a ratio of given side lengths G 603. Apply properties of 30°-60°-90°, 45°-45°-90°, similar, and congruent triangles G 602. Use the Pythagorean theorem
