Lesson Plan

Trigonometric ratios (SOH-CAH-TOA)

Goals / Objectives

Label the hypotenuse, the opposite side and the adjacent side relative to a specified acute angle in a right triangle, and relabel them when the specified angle changes

Write sin, cos and tan of a specified angle as a ratio of given side lengths, reduced to lowest terms

Find a missing side using the Pythagorean theorem in order to write a requested ratio

Explain why a trig ratio depends only on the angle and not on the size of the triangle, using similar triangles

State the exact values of sin, cos and tan at 30, 45 and 60 degrees by reading them off the two special triangles, in rationalized form

Standards

G 509. Express the sine, cosine, and tangent of an angle in a right triangle as a ratio of given side lengths G 604. Apply basic trigonometric ratios to solve right-triangle problems G 603. Apply properties of 30°-60°-90°, 45°-45°-90°, similar, and congruent triangles G 602. Use the Pythagorean theorem
