Lesson Plan

Equations of hyperbolas (recognition and basic properties)

Goals / Objectives

Identify an equation as a hyperbola from the fact that its two squared terms have opposite signs

Read the center off (x - h)^2/a^2 - (y - k)^2/b^2 = 1, handling the sign inversion

Determine from which squared term is positive whether the branches open left-right or up-down

Locate the two vertices, and explain why the curve has no intercepts on the other axis

Sketch both branches using the vertices and the guide box

Normalize a hyperbola equation to standard form by dividing so the right side is 1

Standards

G 609. Recognize special characteristics of parabolas and circles (e.g., the vertex of a parabola and the center or radius of a circle) AF 705. Identify characteristics of graphs based on a set of conditions or on a general equation such as y = ax² + c
