ACT Math
Lesson Plan
Surface area of prisms, cylinders, pyramids, cones, spheres
Goals / Objectives
Find the surface area of a prism, cylinder, pyramid, cone or sphere: determine whether the problem asks for lateral or total surface area, choose the formula that fits the solid, and add the right number of bases
Compute the surface area of right prisms (rectangular, triangular) and cylinders using LSA = Ph and TSA = LSA + 2B
Compute the surface area of regular pyramids and cones using LSA = 1/2 Pl and LSA = pirl, finding the slant height by the Pythagorean theorem when only the height is given, and find TSA by adding the base area
Apply the sphere formula SA = 4pir^2 (no LSA/TSA distinction)
Standards
G 405. Use geometric formulas when all necessary information is given G 601. Use relationships involving area, perimeter, and volume of geometric figures to compute another measure (e.g., surface area for a cube of a given volume and simple geometric probability) G 602. Use the Pythagorean theorem G 705. Solve multistep geometry problems that involve integrating concepts, planning, and/or visualization
