ACT Math
Lesson Plan
Solving radical equations (extraneous solutions)
Goals / Objectives
Solve a radical equation by isolating the radical, raising both sides to the index, solving, and checking every candidate in the original equation
Explain why squaring both sides can introduce an extraneous solution and raising to an odd power cannot, and use the principal-root restriction to reject a candidate without substituting
Solve an equation containing two radicals by repeating the procedure, and an equation written with a rational exponent by raising both sides to the reciprocal power
