Learning Goal
Part of: Summarize and describe distributions — 2 of 2 cluster items
Summarize numerical data sets in relation to their context
Summarize numerical data sets in relation to their context, such as by:
a. Reporting the number of observations.
b. Describing the nature of the attribute under investigation, including how it was measured and its units of measurement.
c. Giving quantitative measures of center (median and/or mean) and variability (interquartile range and/or mean absolute deviation), as well as describing any overall pattern and any striking deviations from the overall pattern with reference to the context in which the data were gathered.
d. Relating the choice of measures of center and variability to the shape of the data distribution and the context in which the data were gathered.

What you'll learn
- **Report the number of observations** (n) and **describe the attribute** under investigation, including measurement method and units, as part of any summary (5.a, 5.b).
- Compute and interpret the **interquartile range (IQR)** as a measure of variability (5.c).
- Compute and interpret the **mean absolute deviation (MAD)** for a small data set, and explain why absolute values are required (5.c).
- **Describe the overall pattern** of a distribution and identify **striking deviations** (informal outliers) with reference to context (5.c).
- **Choose between mean + MAD (or IQR) and median + IQR** based on the distribution's shape and the question the summary is meant to answer (5.d).
- **Write a complete summary paragraph** for a real data set that integrates every required element: n, attribute, units, center, variation, shape, and notable deviations.
